Since I made my first post on my essay plan e-activity 2.2 I have read readings that have focused on ICT integration in schools and have found that often the most important factor that is often overlooked when implementing new innovations is the teacher.
Goal
My focus is still around ICT integration in schools and I am still looking at detail, the Concerns-Based Adoption Model as this model lends itself to help me further develop and research where I would like to focus for my last essay.
My focus on models have changed from the first plan as I found that the two models I was looking at namely CBAM and Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation were too similar in their make up and wasn’t allowing me to think widely and deeply enough on my focused topic. Therefore I am looking more deeply at the Arena of Change model to see the bigger picture of ICT integration in schools. This model is helping me focus on factors that both directly and indirectly affect the implementation of ICT in schools.
Information and Organisation
I will introduce the topic of focus ‘A review of the influencing factors of ICT integration into schools especially BYOD’s’ and then include the review of the two models mentioned and critique their similarities and differences related to my focus of ICT integration in schools. From here the implications will emerge for my context. I will finish with a conclusion that will highlight findings from the research and identify implications for further study in my context.
Key Question
Why do new innovations seem to end up not being sustained in many schools?
Conclusions anticipated
From the readings so far I believe that what I am thinking will be confirmed, that teachers are the most important aspect to consider when implementing a new innovation and so often they are either not consulted and they lack confidence, skill and experience and do not receive enough support during the process. This then results in varying degrees of uptake, attitude and buy in.
Kia ora Rachel, it is great to see how many similarities we have in regards to our studying, working, families and now, our kaupapa for the essay! I also chose CBAM and the arena of change for the exact same reasons as you did. I felt the arena of change enabled me to look at the bigger picture and identify the various layers of influence that in some way, causes a ripple effect that has influenced why we have made some of the changes we have. The CBAM is one of my favourite change theories and I was lucky enough to work alongside an ex-colleague, Derek Wenmoth, when I worked for CORE Education and listen to him facilitate workshops using the CBAM framework. I love that this enables staff to have a voice, to actually be able to identify, articulate and share their concerns with others. I have found that once those concerns are out in the open and staff can see they are not alone, that everyone has concerns, some the same as them, some quite different and that we are all at different levels, it often becomes quite a powerful step in change attitudes to the change, without actually doing anything other than sharing our concerns. It reminds me of the old saying, a problem shared is a problem halved, its takes a lot of pressure off knowing we are not alone! I look forward to reading your essay at some point, and would be happy to share mine with you if you want, it could be really insightful to see how are experiences vary or parallel!
ReplyDeleteHi Tamara, yes it is great how we have so many similarities. Wow that would have been such an experience working with Derek. I really like the CBAM as having been a classroom teacher and also had some experience as an Acting Principal I have seen it from both perspectives. I have found that by giving teachers time to air concerns and feelings it can often stop problems, misunderstandings and anxiety before they get out of control:)
ReplyDeleteI would be more than happy to share my essay with you and would love to read yours:) Good luck with the study.
